PM Bander bands 8000 PMs in 2010

Citizens United to Protect the Maurice River in New Jersey and its Tributaries Purple Martin Project coordinator and retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist, Allen Jackson, have been busy this year.
Allen and his team just recently banded their 8,000th purple martin, a migratory songbird that nests in New Jersey. During the past three years, the team has banded about 22,000 purple martins.
Banding birds allows scientists to study population trends, migratory patterns, their life history and other useful information. It's done by affixing a lightweight metal band, often color-coded, around the bird's leg.
