Sweltering Weather Kills Martin Nestlings

You may have to sprinkle down your birdhouses and gourds several times a day. Some folks will allow the sprinklers to run and the martin adults will fly through the water to cool off. But, this will not help the helpless young inside your martin houses.

Give them some relief and sprinkle the martin equipment so that it is like rain. It will help some to reduce the interior of your compartments.

And, next season, be prepared to do nestreplacements. Yes, nestreplacements is a lot of labor but once you house martins, then it becomes your responsibility to manage them correctly. Remember! when you attract a lot of martins to your houses and gourds, we are setting them up like sitting ducks for predators and mismanagement by landlords. If you are sweltering in 100+ temperatures with fans running, think about martins in the hot conditions in which they live.
