PURPLE MARTINS
I think it will be a good idea to explain why all purple
martin landlords need to have a “Prognosticator” on
hand. We will also go over the life-size laminated photos
of our wonderful purple martin babies from egg stage to
day 28, being a grown fledgling size. This is another tool
of importance.
John Pearson likes to point out that he is ready for everybody
to keep martin records for the 2008 martin colony survey.
Again we will address all important purple martin questions
you might have. Please bring your martin scout arrival date
and martin count.
As always we hope you can bring a martin landlord friend
with you.

2005 Season News...
Thank You...
Dear Purple Martin Landlords of North Texas,
I would like to thank all our members who had
time to come to
City Hall in Grand Prairie, Texas on Tuesday, 5 July
2005 to receive our Purple Martin Day Proclamation from the
Hon.
Mayor
Charles England. It really was a very nice event and
the City Council and the Mayor were impressed seeing so many
of our
PMLNT members present. Thank you so very much.
More thanks go to all the members who came on
Saturday, 9th of July 2005 (Purple Martin Day in the City of
Grand
Prairie, TX
) to celebrate the end of our 2005 purple martin season
with a Pot Luck Dinner. Again we had a grand group present
and
after the business meeting we started our dinner with
the most delicious
food that the members had provided. We really should start
collecting the recipes because there were so many inquiries
for them.
So, if you have the time to share your delicious
food recipes with us, please email them to me and we will
start collecting
them for a future cookbook project.
Many nice door prizes were donated by the City
of Grand Prairie (thanks to Ron McCuller and Tammy Chan) and
Gisela
provided
many plants from her garden to members as well. Thanks
also to Karen
Martin, Editor of the Nature Society organization who sent
a gift certificate for a one year subscription of their
wonderful monthly Nature News magazine.
If you missed this year's "Marty Party" please
make sure you will join us for the one next year. We all had
a real
enjoyable
time. Again, thank you for coming.
To all landlords, I would like to give thanks
for their care and love and time given to the purple martins
this
past season.
It was not the easiest one for the birds with our early
hot temperatures and the drought conditions and the lack
of needed
insects to
feed their young. The parents really put up a struggle.
I really would like to find out how many baby Martins
landlords had lost
this year. When you go through your notes just let me
know about this.
Wishing you all a very safe time for the rest
of this year.
Many nice regards from your friend and president,

Gisela.
PMLNT.

US Postal Purple Martin Stamp
We returned from Washington, D.C. last evening
and I had a very nice conversation with Ms. Elizabeth Altobell.
She is receiving
many good emails from purple martin landlords in behalf of
a martin stamp. She wants to let us know that she is staff
and
not a decision maker.
Anybody interested in a purple martin stamp must " w r i t
e" to
the:
Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee
1735 North Lynn Street
Suite 5013
Arlington, VA 22209-6432
If the subject is "under consideration" - as the purple martin
is - then you will get a card or form letter in response saying
that. Ms. Altobell will not print out any emails. Sorry, I
was not aware of this before my conversation with her yesterday.
So, I like to encourage everybody who has emailed already a
letter in behalf of the purple martin stamp to please send
one via US Postal Service now to the address above. Thank you
so very much for your support.

Message Board
Because of our new status as a Participating Member
of The
Purple Martin Society, NA Share Plan, our former Message
Board will now be displayed on their RoundTable
Conferences under a new category especially set up for our
group. Not only does this expose the interests of our club to
a much
larger
audience,
it
also
enables
viewers
to
obtain
far more specific information relative to our unique
geographical region.
Please feel free to post to our new message board,
now called The North Texas Landlords Conference on The Round
Table Conferences. We are interested in any Martin-related subject
or whatever you feel others will find of interest. When submitting
posts or responses to posts, always be conscious of the many
younger readers who also have access to the RT and write your
comments accordingly.
In those instances where you may have lengthy articles,
or topics in question, please email
me and I may
be able to add the materials to The
Scout Report On-Line instead.
This news program is also a plus in that it, like the RoundTable
Conferences, affords greater coverage of our martin conservation
efforts.

The location of the embroidery shop for the club's
logo patch has changed, just in case some PMLNT members
would like to order the club's shirts with the logo patch.
You can also bring your own shirts. Pre-washing the shirts
before the patch is put on is recommended so that shrinkage
of the fabric doesn't ruin the patch. They also sell
caps to put decals on.

Dear PMLNT Landlords,
The honorable Charles England, Mayor of the City of Grand Prairie,

at the City Hall Council Meeting to all PMLNT landlords proclaiming
Saturday, 8th of July 2006 as “Purple Martin Day in Grand
Prairie, TX”.
The ceremony will be in the Council Chambers of our City Hall,
317 College Street, Grand Prairie, TX. 75053. I like to extend
an invitation to all landlords to come and be present for the
ceremony. The Council Meeting begins at 6:30pm and the proclamation
will be one of the first items.
I would be happy to see a good representation of our members.
Receiving this proclamation is quite an honor and well deserved
for all our purple martin preservation efforts.

2006 Survey - Information Request
Dear Purple Martin Landlords of North Texas,
I hope your 2006 season is as successful and rewarding
as ever. I know how much time and effort we invest in our Purple
Martins
each year.
As this breeding season begins to wind down, several
members have asked about our club’s overall results. While
I have encouraged everyone to report their success to our national
parent organization, we have never tabulated
the results specific to our North Texas population. The data will provide
informative and interesting information we can apply to make
our next breeding season even
better.
We know our landlord membership has grown to over
130 members but how have our martins faired? Is 2006 better than
2005? What effects, if any, have
the drought or development in the Metroplex played in the expansion of
our population?
Did the destruction of habitat caused by hurricane Katrina translate into
a greater influx of birds in North Texas? We can begin to answer these
and other
questions and try to piece together a more complete picture of what is
happening in North Texas with our results. Please help with this
worthwhile undertaking.
Reporting your individual results has never been
easier. Our members with computers can report via our
Conference (forums) at The
PMSNA Round Table Conferences (membership required to post
data) or to me directly at giselaf@northtexasmartins.org . Otherwise
you
can
call me at 972-641-2981. Please submit the following information:
-
Member name and
Telephone or e-mail (in case
of questions)
-
Location of purple martin colony
-
Available martin housing
-
How long a martin landlord
-
Number of breeding pairs
-
Number of eggs
-
Number of fledged young
-
Approximate date of first sighting,
first nest, first fledglings
-
Approximate date of last fledglings
Please take a few minutes to submit your answers
for our survey. I will report back to you a summary of all our
results for
2006. This will be
the start
of something great for our organization and will help in our conservation
efforts
of the Purple Martins. Thank you,
Gisela Fregoe, PMLNT President

It was a very nice ceremony especially because
City Councilman Richard Fregoe presented the Proclamation

and introduced the members present and the audience gave
a big hand of applause for all.
We will display the Certificate at our 8th

To all PMLNT members,
I wanted to share this good news with all. Being still busy with
my quest to get a US Postal Purple Martin Stamp, I had approached
the Grand Prairie Mayor
and City Council Members to make Grand Prairie , TX the "Purple Martin Capitol
of North Texas." So finally on the 19th of September 2006 at the City Council
meeting the Purple Martin Landlords of North Texas received a Resolution proclaiming
Grand Prairie, TX as the "Purple Martin Capitol of North Texas". I
was so very pleased. This is really special.
A local newspaper mentioned in an article that
Grand Prairie has had a strong history with the birds for many
years. A number of things have already happened
in Grand Prairie to recognize the martins.
The new Hwy. 161 will have purple martins on its
supporting structures. There are paintings of the birds on the
outdoor mural at I-30 and Beltline Road.
The martins can be seen on the right (east) side of the underpass as drivers
are
leaving the city heading in the direction of Dallas. A large purple martin
(I know it is the largest in the world, Texas size) is painted on a mural
in Stanton
Park on Dalworth Str.
I really hope that one day our members will be
able to see all the purple martins popping up all over the City
of Grand Prairie, Texas.
And the most important fact is that the Purple
Martin Landlords of North Texas organization was founded right
here on 3 February 1999 with 20 Charter
Members.

2007 Colony Survey
Dear Purple Martin Landlords of North Texas;
Now that our Marty Party is over and the Purple Martin season
has concluded all we have are our memories, pictures and landlord
notes of the 2007 season. If you are anything like me, you have
dozens of stories. We want to know your many successes as well
as any challenges and issues with your birds this year. Your
colony information is valuable to our group as we can all learn
from one another.
Once again this year we will be conducting our
Purple Martin survey and compiling the data from all our members
to see what
impact we're having right here in North Texas. You may recall
from last year's study that we had 554 breeding pairs and 1,933
fledged young with reports from 40 of our Purple Martin landlord
members. We started to establish trends on when our birds arrive
and when they leave and their possible migratory routes. We are
hoping even more of our members will participate in this year's
survey.
No colony is too small and all information is valuable.
Even if you cannot complete the entire questionnaire send us
what
you have. John Pearson, our fellow member from Southlake, will
be helping again this year on our survey. All participants will
receive a copy of the survey results. Please help us make this
year's survey even better than our last.
A form for the 2007 Purple Martin Landlords
of North Texas study is included for your use following this
letter and may be sent
as a
fax to 972-641-2069; or email: giselaf@northtexasmartins.org or
John Pearson at fax 817-804-2938 or email: jpearson@statenational.com.
It is also available as a Downloadable
Reporting Form in Microsoft Word Format. It is also available
as a PDF file for viewing
on-line or downloading.
Thank you all in advance for your contribution to this exciting
research and I look forward to seeing our results.

Lewisville, TX Roost Event
Dear Purple Martin Landlords,
The time has come to prepare for our yearly outing
to the Lewisville, TX purple martin pre-migratory roost again.
DATE: SATURDAY, 4th of AUGUST 2007 TIME: 8:00
pm
My reporter on the Roost, Margie Clark, is thrilled
to see so many martins gathering already. She suggests that the
best place to view the martins is at the east
end of the big parking lot. This way we can look westward into the sunset.
The western sky stays lighter so we can observe the birds
longer and better.
For those who like to gather for a meal at the
Golden Corral Restaurant on Main Street and I-35 in Lewisville,
TX (
Intersection north on Main and west
of I-35),
we will meet there at 6:00 pm. You can also view
an area map. (Requires
Acrobat Reader - Get
Yours)
For all other
landlords just meet us around 8:00 pm in the parking lot near
the old Hobby Lobby Store, south of Main Street and east of
Old Orchard Road.
I hope many of you will be able to join us for
an exciting close look at thousands of purple martins.
See you next Saturday - Regards from Gisela, PMLNT
